Majacraft Spinning Wheels
The Little Gem is a state of the art travelling folding wheel. It is especially for use by those who need to transport a spinning wheel to club and conference functions, but has the capability to cater for all types of spinning. The Little Gem is very suitable for use while on vacation or away from home and can be transported folded flat but assembled, or placed in the special carry bag made for this wheel. The Little Gem easily handles tasks of spinning and plying wool, mohair, silk, etc. The Little Gem, although small and incredibly light (around 10 pounds), is full height with an attractive design. The little Gem was developed with entirely different principles to other spinning wheels. It was two years in design and development and has been used to work with the finest of fibers to coarse wools.
The pedals operate on a unique rolling action over the crank, entirely different to the up and down action of conventional pedals. The head portion is separate from the main stem and is able to be raised and turned to suit the spinner. This is a major development in design where the spinner can feed the fiber straight into the orifice rather than moving the hands or body to suit the direction of the wheel. This wheel is extremely light, weighing around ten pounds, but is very stable on any surface. Best of all, it comes in its own thermal carrying bag. The Little Gem is very easy to assemble and disassemble, with the wheel and lower stem folding down over the pedals after the head has been removed. However it can also be carried or stored folded flat with the head assembly turned to the side.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A "state of art" double treadle folding wheel with features not seen in other manufactured wheels. Comes complete, packed in a thermal carrying bag. All wheels are individually numbered, assembled and tested before packaging.
ORIFICE HEIGHT: Adjustable from 26-28 inches. WEIGHT: 10lbs (this varies with wood density of each wheel) RATIOS: Ratios are 4.5:1, 6.0:1, 8.5:1, 10.5:1, 12.75:1. These ratios are approximate due to variations in hand turned wheels. It is important to count ratios from pedal revolutions rather than wheel revolutions. WHEEL DIAMETER: 8.25 in - Wheel construction is rimu high density fiberboard with solid rimu face. The wheel is belt driven and spins approximately 1.5 times the speed of pedal's rotation. CONSTRUCTION TIMBER: New Zealand Rimu. BEARINGS: Flyer shaft and wheel are mounted on sealed roller bearings. BOBBINS: Wheels supplied with three plastic bobbins of large capacity. These bobbins are boilable and almost indestructible. DRIVE BANDS: Flexible polycord TENSION ADJUSTMENT: Head fitted with a scotch tension. Drive belt adjustment is by raising head. FLYER DESCRIPTION: Lightweight flyer with delta orifice. Has adjustable flyer hook for easy bobbin filling. Fine fiber flyer also available. TREADLE: Comfortable rolling action FINISH: Finished in a hardwearing precatalysed lacquer. The wheel is packed in its carrying bag for shipping. The small wheel lies at the heart of the design, and instead of being driven by rods connected to the pedals, the wheel is belt driven from a small crank between the pedals. This allows the wheel to spin at any given speed - the Gem wheel rotates at around one and a half times faster than a normal wheel. It also allows the wheel to be folded down to be transported.
