WORKSHOPS Updated January 9, 2010 Soap Making This class is offered at our farm in our small commercial kitchen. The class is approximately 3 hours in length and I can only accommodate 6 students at a time. Classes are generally on a Saturday or a Sunday afternoon and special arrangements can be made for an evening class. The fee for a class put together by an interested party is $150. for up to 6 students, or $40. per person if you are signing up individually. Three types of soaps will be made. The students will make two batches of soap from scratch, learning how to measure out each of the ingredients and a batch of hand-milled soap. The first type of soap will be a large batch of basic soap using olive, palm and coconut oils. This soap will take at least 2 days to set up and cool down before it can be handled, and 3 to 4 weeks' storage before it is cured. A similar batch of basic soap made weeks before and cured will be available for the students to use in a hand-milled soap. The second type of soap made will be a soap made in a blender. Essential oils will be added to it along with other natural ingredients and the finished product will be poured into take-home molds for the students. The third soap will be a hand-milled variety, using the basic soap similar to what was made earlier in the class (discussed above), grating down the cured soap, learning how to assemble and prepare the ingredients for melting, adding color and essential oils and pouring into a take-home student mold. HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE SOAP-MAKING CLASS If you are interested in a soap making class, please email me and I shall put your name on the list. Most classes are held on Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. At our last class, the learning soap makers made a Lemon Smoothie and an Oatmeal soap using the blender. They also made a batch of Apple soap and a batch of Tree Tea and Neem soap. |
